Definitions

Speech Sound Disorders - any difficulty or combination of difficulties with perception, motor production, or phonological representation of speech sounds and speech segments

Auditory Comprehension - understanding what we hear and what we are listening to.  This is a necessary skill for children to be able to follow directions, comprehend stories, and engage in conversation.

 

Expressive Language - the ability to produce language.  This includes the content (semantics), form (grammar/syntax), and use (pragmatics) of language.  This is a necessary skill for children to be able to answer questions and tell stories.

 

Sensory Based Feeding Disorders - feeding disorders can lead to health, learning and social problems.  Feeding disorders include problems with sucking, eating from a spoon, chewing, or drinking from a cup.

Swallowing Disorders- difficulty with moving food or liquid from the mouth, throat, or esophagus to the stomach. 

​

Apraxia of Speech - a neurological speech sound disorder that impacts precision and consistency of movements used for making speech sounds.

 

Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders - patterns involving oral and orofacial musculature that interfere with normal growth, development, or function of orofacial structures, or call attention to themselves.

 

Fluency Disorders - an interruption in the flow of speaking characterized by atypical rate, rhythm, and disfluencies.
